It has become apparent to me recently that I need a hobby…preferably a constructive one that does not involve the computer (or any of the tracking lists, blogs, bulletin boards, online groups, etc. that come with it).
The problem is I am essentially a bookish sort of girl who is happiest curled up with a book or my computer. Sure, I love to go out and be active, explore things, etc., but those really aren't things I can translate into a daily hobby I can use to take my mind off of what is looking to be an emotionally draining couple of months where I will need to be keeping busy and sane.
I enlisted my BFF Ali(ce)'s help in coming up with a hobby for me. She knows me really well (partly because she is like 85% the same person). Her response, "This is a little tricky since we are not super crafty people." She's right; I have no patience for anything creative (other than Blurb, which is off limits as it is a computer-related hobby). This means things like sewing, kitting, scrapbooking, quilting, and anything else like that is off the table.
I considered exploring cooking, but the reality of my working mom status is that cooking a creative or fun meal is just not really a daily option. I considered redecorating my house, but the only room I really need to redecorate is Little Bug's new room, and I'll be honest, that's not where my head needs to be right now. Plus, any other room would just be me spending money on more decorations. I don't think Appa would really get behind that sort of hobby. I don't draw, or paint, or even have an idea how to repurpose things for artistic purposes.
We finally came up with something that would be useful and something I could be successful with some time and effort.
I'm going to landscape our yard.
For me, this will be a major undertaking. I hate to garden. Hate it. The previous owners planted all these fancy flowers and plants that bloom throughout the year and I hate them because the way they are planted leaves room for tons of weeds (not to mention I think some of them look like weeds). I like boring, traditional, symmetrical looking landscaping…they liked cracked-out abstract not-sure-if-that-was-an-accident-or-not landscaping. It's going to be a challenge, and that is exactly what I need.
My plan of attack is to spend time right now researching how to garden, what types of plants and flowers and planters I would like to use, and planning out my planting. Once it gets warmer and lighter, I will be able to work on this project after Little Bug goes down for bed.
I'll need to get an outdoor wine glass...
So, if anyone has tips on gardening, ripping out expensive flowers, various types of low-maintenance plants and ground cover, send them my way.

has officially began.
Good idea! I, for one, suck at gardening but I commend you for trying this out. I'm picturing you out in the yard super gung ho and ready to weed and landscape but then you ending up on a lawn chair drinking that glass of wine, saying "I just need to think about this for a minute...."
ReplyDeleteDrinking wine outside after a long day sounds like a good hobby to me. :) Seriously, though, best of luck to you!!! I have no tips since I'm a terrible gardener. I can't wait to hear how it turns out!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I tend to always need to have a big project that I'm working on....hence preparing to list our house and possible move.....which means that I'm going to join you this weekend in some spring planting! I have no advice--I'm as clueless as you are!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great hobby, with a rewarding outcome! I wish you lived close to me....I could give you like a million cuttings of fantastic ground-covers - none of which I know the names to b/c they were all given to me. (I hate weeding so much that I put it EVERYWHERE.) Also, in my experience Target has great plastic wine (and margarita) glasses for outdoor use. :)
ReplyDeleteooh ooh! i can help! i LOVE to garden! i move plants around like they are furniture - my husband loves this about me ;). it takes me awhile to get the right feng shui. it's one thing i am going to miss after we move. although, our new landlord is excited that i studied horticulture in college and hoping that i will plant some things in our new back yard. a win win situation for me!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! See you can use the computer to research, then implement...best of both worlds. I'll dig up our landscaping plan from a few years ago and pass along some of the names for you. I'm a so-so gardener. Unfortunately, a lot of it is trial and error. It took me 3 years to find the perfect plant for our front porch.
ReplyDeleteI recently realized the same thing. It was after my doctor asked what my hobbies were and I had no idea. Can being a mom be a hobby? Because most of the time, that's all I feel like I have time for. As for finding one that doesn't involve blogging or a lot of money, I haven't come up with it yet! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHappy planning, digging and planting! My only comment or suggestion is about ivy. I think it is very pretty but it can grow like a WEED! I took some out at our house permanently because it grew underneath the siding. (I did this when we had new siding.) I agree the left over cement angel babies are a tad bit creepy.
ReplyDeleteCori, please pass on the wisdom you aquire because we have a huge landscaping project coming our way this spring. With having moved at the end of last summer, we left behind all of our beautiful plants at our former house. We are still thinking and looking for inspiration that we like.
ReplyDeleteIf the landscaping thing doesn't work out, you are welcome to join me scrapbooking! I have a little group of friends who meet about once a month at the Archiver's by Golf Mill for a scrapbook night! I am sure you will prevail in your landscaping plans, but just keep it in mind... :)
ReplyDeleteThe way you describe this cracks me up! You hate gardening, but you're going to do it anyway, because you like boring landscaping...I hope you find this project satisfying.
ReplyDeleteLandscaping is hard! I think we're going to hire someone to help us with garden design. I keep planting, digging up, replanting...
I hope you find something you like.
