Confession time: I saw Christmas trees in front of my local grocery store last night and got secretly giddy. This is an egregious sin in my family.Appa is very vocal about his distaste for skipping holidays. He feels very protective of Thanksgiving and gets annoyed when the Christmas decorations come up before Thanksgiving. This year a small aisle at Target was up before Halloween, which sent him into a mini-tirade on the way home about how dumb that was. I nod my head and agree with him because I do think that Christmas is becoming more and more of a multi-month affair, which to me cheapens the thrill of the season.
However. secretly, I LOVE feeling that thrill as soon as possible. I count down the days until we can "officially" start listening to holiday music (Black Friday at our house) and get out of decorations. I've always been a purest though, and held off until Appa and I could enjoy the start of the holiday season together.
However, this year, I've been cheating. There is holiday music on the radio now, and I listen to it on the way to work. There is nothing like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" to brighten a rainy November morning. I am already decorating my house in my head and my holiday cards are printed and ready to be stuffed. I'm itching to start celebrating what in many ways is my first "emotionally real" Christmas with my son....and I love it, all of it.
So, I don't tell Appa, but when I go to Target, I spend extra time wandering the Christmas aisles, admiring the decorations and soaking up the anticipation of my favorite time of year. I literally cannot.wait. for it to begin.
how do you already have your cards done???!!!
ReplyDeletei love this time of year too! we always get our tree the day after thanksgiving and i cannot wait! it will be extra special this year!
Um, C, I'm with Appa on this one. I get pissed when i see the Xmas decorations at Target before Halloween too! And I can appreciate his protectiveness over Thanksgiving ... Maybe I'll get to meet said Appa come January and we can bond over this :)
ReplyDeleteKelly, I am sure at some point during your trip you will meet Appa and you guys can bond. :)
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that this holiday season is a total daze for me. I LOVE the holidays, thanksgiving included...but I can't even begin to focus. I think that like you, next year will be really special.
ReplyDeleteCori I LOVE the Christmas season and I'm especially excited about it this year. I've been dreaming of Christmas morning with X even though he'll have no idea what is happening. I've already begun playing Christmas music; made a spot for the tree (which we get the weekend after Thanksgiving); hung lights outside (but don't turn them on yet, even though I'm so anxious to) and my Christmas cards are done and in the envelopes with stamps on them! I'm just a wee bit excited!
