A Fact of My Life

Scene: Mommy/son dinner.

Very nice 30-something waitress who had been flirting with Little Bug all evening:
"He's simply adorable. Are you babysitting?"

Me, without a second of hesitation or annoyance: "Nope, he's mine!"

End scene.

The fact of the matter is I'll always get this question. And the fact of the matter is it no longer bothers me or trips me up.

He's mine. I'm his. And I don't mind who asks.

  1. What's weird is that I HAVEN'T gotten this question from anyone and yet .... I feel like I'm always on the edge of my seat WAITING for this question or I'm always assuming everyone thinks I'm the nanny. I hate that I feel this way since no one has actually made that assumption (at least explicitly). What's wrong with me?

  2. I've only got this question once, when G first came home and I flubbed it terribly. Next time, I'll rock it DDoM style!

  3. I'm with Kelly--this has never happened to me. I do get asked "did you adopt him" a lot. In my experience, it is mostly people who are interested in adoption themselves, although I have to admit, I am not always thrilled with the way the question comes out--the way it singles him out apart from Isaac. I think a nicer thing to say might be, "your son is so cute--what country is he from?". In the end though, people will say all sorts of things, and what is important--what they will hopefully remember--is our response. And yours is perfect.

  5. We've been told on 2 separate occasions that "he looks just like you".....this is while both my husband and I are together. Come on people, he is CLEARLY Asian and we are CLEARLY Caucasian. I quickly thanked them and took it as a compliment since he is so stinkin' cute. Gotta love the general public!

  6. I am actually impressed that when you are in a public place (especially a restaurant) you feel confident claiming your adorable, well behaved son. Since Bella turned 2 she hasn't been much fun on dinner dates, and if someone asked if I was babysitting I would shout "YES!!! Do you think MY child would act this way?!"

  7. Yes!!

I've been asked similar questions quite often since moving to our VERY small, 99.9% Caucasian town. I'm so used to it now and don't mind at all since most folks are kind and gushing over how sweet he is. :-) You're right, it's a fact of life!
